Murder in the North End Nell Sweeney Mystery Series Book 5 edition by PB Ryan Patricia Ryan Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Of the series, so far (I haven't read the last book yet), this is the most complicated. As a mystery, the interesting things are the facts of the case, facts and facets of the era, and Will and Bell's sleuthing. However, as a mystery alone, it is worth only four stars, since the solution is unexpected and it fits with the facts, but it is essentially impossible to arrive at the solution as the reader. I suppose exceptionally intuitive readers might, but intelligence alone won't get you there. Where the book really shines is in the characters - the evolution of Will and of Nell, the further involvement of Colin Cook and learning about his life, learning a bit more about Martin, and the development of all of the secondary characters, especially Denny. However, that requires a participation in the whole series. If you have kept up with the series, then the story is golden and feels way too short. In addition, speculation runs rampant in the reader's mind. As a mystery and a continuation in the series, the book has surprises, is well-written, and authentic in detail and period, for the most part. (The following parenthetical is a very minor spoiler to a point that has no significance to the mystery in this novel and very little to the plot, and only if this is the first Nell Sweeney mystery that you are considering. While Harvard had a reputation as a good medical school in the States, medical education in the U.S. was horrible, until the founding of Johns Hopkins in 1893, which taught medicine using the scientific method as it was taught in Europe. Harvard, which was considered the best here, did not even have anatomy classes and almost no student actually examined a body, living or dead, before leaving school. Harvard was considered one of the best medical schools, because the students had to have had an undergraduate degree for the most part, unlike many other medical schools. It was harder to get into a liberal arts college than medical school. Thus, it is unlikely that Harvard would have offered a course in forensic medicine that included, potentially, anatomy lectures.) Looking at the novel as both a mystery and an ongoing story involving Nell Sweeney, I would highly recommend it. Even as just a mystery, it is very entertaining.

Murder in the North End Nell Sweeney Mystery Series Book 5 edition by PB Ryan Patricia Ryan Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

As Nell Sweeney investigates circumstances which surround a murder in North Boston ... the difficulties of life as an immigrant Irish catholic reveal themselves in this story with its history of the culture and society of the Boston area as an integral component of the story. With Nell's difficult and hidden past... her understanding of Boston's seedier side and down trodden Irish population are at odds with her relative life of privilege as governess to a child of one of Boston's premier families. Her friendship with the black sheep and reformed eldest estranged son of her employer's -- makes investigations possible where a young woman may not venture alone. Astutely the author effortlessly ( so it seems), takes a simple story and weaves the personalities, emotions and lives of her principle characters and the places and era in which they live-- into a single grand fabric of her nicely told tale. The author is undoubtedly part spider. And, again Ms Ryan as gifted author --- is up to the task at hand. This story stands with the others in the Nell Sweeney series .... another excellent, enjoyable read.
Sweet Nell Sweeney, with a sordid and battered past, and Dr. Will Hewitt, the man despised and sent away as a child, not knowing he originated from his dear mother's only sin before her marriage. Both hiding secrets and hurts that would have destroyed lesser souls, but for the kindness of an aging physician who helped Nell in her time of need, and Nell herself who snatched aristocrat William Hewitt from the clutches of opium. Somehow they found each other through their love of a child, Gracie Will's unbeknownst daughter conceived by a servant in his parents home on furlough from the war that would take his brother's life and nearly destroy his own; Nell, her governess, destined to remain married to the man in jail who took from her the ability to have her own child. Their love for each other is as strong as their love for little Gracie. But it is the late 1800's in Boston, and their secrets and societal pressures must keep them apart. As love blooms, Dr. Will Hewitt has already given his word to the president of the United States to return to a foreign war as an Army Surgeon. Nell is Irish, Catholic, and the husband who almost killed her is threatening to reveal her past. Being married, Nell would lose her post as well as Gracie, as will her father, who cannot claim his own child. Where do they go from here?
This is the fourth book in a series of five. The story and character development are wonderful. It just pulled me right in and made me buy the next book and read it immediately (I'm actually re-reading them now, having read them a couple years ago and was so sorry when they ended. Though they have a great ending).
Each book stands alone very well, in that you don't have to read the next book. It's just that the series provides more story and at the end of the fifth book, closure.
My poor family! When I first read them, I didn't cook or do any laundry - I was too absorbed in my reading! Mystery, suspense, romance. Characters you love and others you love to hate. What more could you want?
I am always on the hunt for exciting, but clean, novels. I like Cussler and Koontz, Higgins, Grisham and Ludlam. This author slants toward the romantic a bit much for me (more plot and action, less heart, please), but writes well and the settings and plot lines are good. Unfortunately, the editing could use some help. The last two books in the Nell Sweeney series have some egregious editing mistakes from the use of the wrong word in a sentence (then instead of than) to the wrong character name (Mary instead of Chloe). Forgivable, but not professional. I would be glad to review the books for free if the author is interested. This is an amateur's mistake and does not do her caliber of talent justice. Still, a good read if you like steamy / romantic without dealing with the brash or blatant.
