If you love reading about true mysteries of the world this (The Mammoth Encyclopedia of the Unsolved) book is for you. It is a giant 662 page volume that explores numerous fascinating topics. It has something for every taste and interest. I was surprised to read some of the sections but I also was familiar with many of the topics. Each subject is explained with some detail but mostly provides an excellent overview of each topic. Unlike many people, I always read the introduction to all the books I review. This one was interesting in that it seemed to emphasize its disagrements with the American science association, Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal. It was like the author was attempting to justify some of the obvious questionable topics when it came to this book. However, this short review cannot do this book justice. In spite of my disagreements with the position that some of these topics are NOT unsolved, I still think it is a good read.

The following are just a few of the fascinating subjects explored in this book: King Arthur and Merlin, Atlantis, The Bermuda Triangle, Big Foot, Agatha Christie, Crop Circles, The Curse of the Pharaohs, Fairies, Kaster Hauser, Rudolf Hess, The Holy Shroud of Turin, Homer and the Fall of Troy, The Mystery of Hypnosis, Jack the Ripper, The Loch Ness Monster, The Mystery of the Mary Celeste, Where is the Mona Lisa, Did Robin Hood Really Exist? Who was Shakespeare? Unidentified Flying Objects, Vampires, Zombies and many other topics.

In conclusion, this is a book that is full of interesting subjects but not all of these are unsolved and many have actually been proven to be hoaxes. Nevertheless, this book was a fun read.

The Mammoth Encyclopedia of Unsolved Mysteries is a great reading material book cover a large number of unsolved mysteries throughout the world. the writers go into long lovely detail on every subject in this volume and it make you truly wonder about these mysteries.
This book at times was very long winded, but had some very interesting subjects. Certain chapters are very terse and devoid of detail, others go into way too much detail. I generally liked the book, but be grudgingly gave it four stars. It could have easily been three stars.
SO far I love this well researched book on our worlds unsolved mysteries adn am looking forward to hours more fun with it. I will certainly be reading the other books in the Mammoth series.
Also the author is a very insightful man and should really write a self help book. I loved his first chapter where he spoke about the world around us being exciting and fascinating, if only we could see it.
This is a very interesting book, and it covers the subject matter quite well. I would reccommend it to fans of the genre, and I would have given it five stars, except for the fact that the completeness in coverage of some of these mysteries was uneven and hit and miss. Otherwise...well worth a read.
The book starts out well, but each chapters discuses what the author seems to believe is background relevant to each topic. Rather, it is much nonsense that I often skipped. In fact, I skipped many of the chapters on mysteries most have probable never heard. He seems to dwell on these rather than on ones which the reader is likely to be interested. I probably only truly ready half.
when this book arrived I was in no mood to read it just yet, but I was curious as to whether it was well written, so I decided to read just a small paragraph, that's when I was sucked in, and realized I had to keep reading, for it was to good to put down. and that was just the first story. and yes it is a mammoth Book!!!it measure one and three fourths inches thick.

I have finished the book, only skiped one or two stories, and found that it was not as exciting as i first thought, it is still a good book full of interesting stories, but for someone like me who has read extensivly in this area, most of the stories where nothing new. but I was glad I bought it, for although I already knew of most of the stories in the book I did not have a copy of them, in my library, which is now corrected with this large fat book.
Many of the negative reviews here were obviously written by people who didn't factor in that much of the material in this book was added from other, dated books. So if you're looking for the latest evidence or a completely exhaustive examination of any one subject that's listed in the table of contents, you might be disappointed. However, some of the chapters still hold their own as among the most informative, objective, and well-researched essays ever written on the paranormal. The poltergeist chapter alone is worth the price of the book, IMHO. Even the dated stuff is fun to read. Wilson was a great writer; intelligent and concise. Collectors of occult and paranormal subjects should be scooping up Colin Wilson's books. He was an important writer and his death last year was a great loss to the paranormal community.
