I read this for the first time forty years ago in my twenties. Then, again now, in my sixties. I have always loved JDM's vocabulary, stretched metaphors, and worldly philosophizing. As a 20 yr. old I focused naturally on the glandular hyperbole of Travis McGee's understanding of female sexuality. Avant Guard for the late 60's. But now, with a little more life under my belt, I cherish the sense of grasshopper he represents. I look back and realize it may have played a large role in my own life and the rereading provides help in minimizing the regrets. Pale Gray for Guilt plays a pivotal role in distilling that which is McGee. In this story his Quioxytic journey is represented in its purist form. Friends to help, multiple dragons to slay, fiery temptation at his feet, and a clear self analysis and uncertainty of philosophy and motivations. This year I have two sons in their twenties. They have read and enjoyed more contemporary heroes such as Spenser and Reacher - (NOT the Tom Cruise version!) They also both enjoyed the JDM Classic The Girl, The Gold Watch, etc.. I will ask them both to read this story. I think it will help us all to bridge the generation gap in ways that I can only imagine as they and I continue to sometimes tilt our lances.Tags : Pale Gray for Guilt (Travis McGee Mysteries) [John D. Pale Gray for Guilt Travis McGee Mysteries John D MacDonald 9780449224601 Books Reviews
John MacDonald was more than just a mystery writer. If you read mysteries just for the puzzle, you may not like this one. MacDonald writes of time, place, human nature and offers observations of same in addition to there being a mystery. In this one there is a clear message that most of our regrets concern things we didn't do rather than things we did. As a result this is primarily a story of revenge.
I like the feel and tempo of MacDonald's Travis McGee books; I have read several of them. Pale Gray begins with the usual feel as it grips the reader and pulls them into McGee's world. But the middle ground in this story seemed slow like walking across a big farm field. But MacDonald makes up for the slowness in the final chapter, closing up all the loose ends with a flourish.
For books that were written quite a few years ago, the Travis McGee novels still come across well and don't see too dated. In my opinion this is probably my favorite McGee novel. One of Travis's old friends is first forced out of business so some unscrupulous people can acquire his land. Then he is murdered and McGee decides he needs to help revenge his friend and get some money for his widow by his "salvage" methods. What follows is a great con done the Travis McGee way. Get ready to enjoy a great book.
I have been reading MacDonald since 1967. They are without question the best i have ever read, and the Travis McGee series is the best series I have ever read. The economy of language used by the author has never been duplicated in anything I have ever read. The stories all hold up after fifty years and multiple readings. The gold standard.
There was more than one John D. MacDonald....
I wouldn't be reading his Travis McGee tales over and over....
I pay tribute to MacDonald's writing each time I reluctantly come to the end of one of his McGee novels.
Twelve dollars each for popular fiction novels half a century old? And yet, I keep buying them. I was around in the ‘60s, but I just discovered the McGee series. The writing style alone is worth the read. Each book is two hundred plus pages of immersively vivid, whimsically ironic entertainment. The dated aspects are marginal to the stories; most of the action could easily be set in today’s world. I’m reading the McGee series in sequence. I hope he maintains his idealism, personal and professional, to the end.
I first read this several decades ago, I have worn out of given away a number of paperback copies, so I'm gradually back-filling the Travis McGee saga in hardback (I have 16 so far, including THE LAST ONE LEFT which is only peripheral to McGee since only the boat, La Munequita is shared with PALE GRAY FOR GUILT). Also provides the back-story for Puss Killian (LONELY SILVER RAIN).
As usual McGee, Meyer and the Bahia Mar gang out-con the con men, get the money back and gain revenge as well as life provides.
As with any of the McGee tales, what happens varies only in the details from book to book - the the way in which MacDonald tells the tale is the true star of each story. MacDonald was a truly gifted writer and often overlooked because of the genre (thrillers) and medium (paperback) in which he wrote. He is among the very limited group of writers I can re-read again and again and still find enjoyment in the recounting.
