This is the first book of a new series about Liberty, Ohio.
This one starts out in the present day but goes back in time to the Civil War and how blacks were taken out of the south via the Underground Railroad system to start new life's in the north.
This is about Birdie and her family over the centuries of time. She is a thief-it's all she knows how to do thanks to her mother. Her father is in jail for a car theft and she travels to Liberty, OH to find the treasure.
She reads a book about being a lady, the etiquette and manners. We find her in a restaurant where she's just gotten a job waitressing and will be living in the apartment upstairs. She will have to share it with Hugh, a newspaper reporter.
They tend to get along ok at times not so well. She finds the clues she was looking for in her search for the rubies. She talks to many in town and finds more. Problem is Hugh's friend at the paper is onto a story about Birde's parents and how they stole the money in the investment firm.
This is also the story of many others paths that she crosses and they all have a bearing in the story. Took me quite some time to actually get into this story and I'm so glad I stuck it out as it is an adventure, some travel, and some romance.
Especially like the ending and how everything fits into place.
There is an excerpt from the next book in the series, at the end.

This was a new author for me. I enjoyed it so much. I love a new series😄
Treasure Me is book two of the Liberty series by Christine Nolfi. The book is in a series but can be read as a stand-alone. It is a good book although it bogs down a little. It is also a little too predictable yet it does have some surprises.
Birdie Kaminsky is a thief. She is good at what she does as she has been working on it for thirty-one years. However, she yearns to get out of her criminal life and live one as a law-abiding citizen. After her latest brush with the law, she heads for a small Ohio town called Liberty. She is finally going to try to run down her family history. Stories she has heard tell her that her ancestor’s lover, Justice Postell, had fled the South Carolina plantation on which she was a slave with a fortune in given to her by her lover, Lucas. She fled North and he was to follow. According to family stories, a clue to the location of the treasure was in a portrait of Justin Postell which was in a small diner in Liberty called Second Chance. Birdie heads to Liberty to find the picture and the clue. Can she leave her criminal ways behind?
Hugh Schaffer was a journalist at the Akron Register. However, he was also plagued with alcohol and women which has put his job in real danger. His only hope of being kept on was to return to Liberty, Ohio and Second Chance and do a follow-up story on the man who had been behind raising money for his little girl in Liberty for a bone marrow transplant. The little girl had already had the transplant but money was still coming in. What was the father doing with the money coming in? So he heads for Liberty.
Birdie got to the Second Chance and was hired on as a waitress. She was also offered the room upstairs which was rented out. However, before she could even begin to move in, she learns the room has been rented to Hugh Schaffer too. Since it is the only room in Liberty, they fight over it. Eventually they agree to share the apartment. After all, neither of them plan to stay long. Which one gets his/her assignment finished first? At what cost?
What Nolfi is really writing about here is redemption and courage. Birdie is a survivor and holds close to her heart the historical account of another strong survivor; a black woman who succeeded at a time when few women of any race did so. This piece of history has given Birdie something to strive for and seek over an incredibly difficult life journey. Inevitably, that connection will create a new world for Birdie and will give her a direction redeem her past misdeeds. News reporter Hugh needs redemption as well, and the courage to face his shortcomings with honor. Without being a spoiler, let me say that the ending is wonderful and the journey is well worth your time as a reader. Nolfi writes about family and community, about second chances and hard choices, wonderfully. Also, there is much action, drama, and great fun in these pages as well. Highly recommend this book and the author.
One of the best, heartfelt , intriguing stories i have read in a long time. The mystery of the past with hopes of a future. Just enough mystery to get involved but not so overwhelming you get tired juzt trying to keep up. The perfect short story
